Violence against civilians and the dislocation of people from their homes and livelihoods has caused a public health crisis in the region.
|
What ARC does in Darfur:
- Agricultural Livelihoods Support
- Mother and Child Care
- Primary Health Care
- Small Infrastructure Reconstruction
- Water and Sanitation Services
|
|
Operational Since: Autumn 2004
In late 2004, ARC deployed a team of humanitarian workers to Sudan to set up operations in the troubled region. The team began by delivering assistance to communities in the Gareida corridor of South Darfur. ARC repaired and reopened primary health clinics and provided medical treatment to people who left everything in search of safety. ARC also established a mobile health clinic to serve remote communities that would not otherwise receive medical care.
|
|
|
Currently, ARC runs 16 primary health clinics, repairs or builds one wateryard and one new well per month, and assists farmers with seeds, tools, training, care of livestock, and development of community gardens.
Milestones:
ARC continues to maintain an ongoing mix of emergency and recovery programs, serving 350,000 displaced and war-affected people around the city of Nyala.
|
|
Current Needs:
In 2010 and beyond, ARC will continue pursuing the following objectives with the communities we serve:
-
strengthening health care services and practices
-
improving access to potable water and promoting good hygiene and sanitation practices
-
improving food security among war-affected households, particularly female-headed households
-
and increasing protection for women and girls
