Where ARC Works in Guinea: N'Zerekore prefecture

People We Serve: Liberian and Sierra Leonean Refugees, Guinean Nationals

Civil Wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone have forced people from their homes and livelihoods to seek refuge in neighboring Guinea. Though conflicts in the two countries have waned, the situation is still too tenuous for many people, especially vulnerable women, to return home. ARC also works to rebuild the livelihoods of war-affected Guineans through income-generation and conflict prevention activities.

What ARC does in Guinea:
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention
  • Repatriation
  • Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response
  • Conflict Prevention
  • Job Creation
Operational Since: 1996

ARC launched its first program in the Gueckedou prefecture, providing health care and income generation services to refugees. In December of 2000, the program was interrupted when ARC was forced by fighting to leave Gueckedou. ARC then transplanted its programs to Kissidougou prefecture.

Milestones:

Last year, we educated 35,000 women who have suffered physical violence of their basic rights and entitlements. We produced and distributed nearly 60,000 informational pamphlets on sexually transmitted infections and launched the women's center in Conakry.

Finance Salone, ARC's microfinance institution in Guinea, provided microloans to more than 14,000 small business owners through eight branches throughout the country.

Current Needs:

Many people in Guinea need the resources to rebuild their lives shattered by conflict. Specifically, many people need the skills and ability to earn a living and support themselves and their families again. ARC helps as many people as it can by giving small business and skills training that will help them become self-sufficient.
